Not All Who Wander Are Lost – Some Like The Detour

We Have Sprouts!

Ive learned a lot in the 5 or so weeks since I first planted onion seeds. First, everyone has different opinions on when, how, and in what you should start your seeds. Ive tried a few different suggestions and adapted as needed. I am considering this year an epic learning failure. I know I will fail and I think that has made this easier.

Ive accidentally killed several plants. Too much/little light, too much/little water, too little heat, and too much touching from toddlers has all helped to harm many seedlings. I learned that the rims, on the dixie cups I planted my seeds in, prevent proper uptake of water. Also, the holes I had popped in the bottom of the cups were deemed useless when mold built up on them and prevented any drainage. I pulled the bottoms off all my cups and they seem to be doing well.

We currently have onions, bell peppers, jalapeños, basil, tomatoes, flowers, and strawberries sprouted. Hopefully we make it into the spring with some surviving plants. My parents and grandparents are coming out mothers day weekend to bring home some of the plants we have started. I would hate to send them home empty handed.
